Like any good workspace, your kitchen requires the right tools. But when you’re moving out on your own for the first time, how do you know what you’ll need? You shouldn’t buy an abundance of tools you’ll never use—especially if you’re living on a student budget—so put a cap on your spending. Gather kitchen supplies that even the most basic cooks use regularly:
Dishes, Glasses & Silverware:
You need something to eat on, so pick up the basics. Also, you need glasses to drink out of. Not to mention, forks, knives, spoons, bowls, and plates!
Toaster:
If you have a busy schedule, eat something on-the-run by sticking bread in the toaster. You just need to buy one first!
Kettle/Coffee Maker:
Whether you’re a tea or coffee person, you should have your preferred beverage of choice at home so you’re not spending obscene amounts of money every day. If you don’t believe me, check out 4 Budgeting Tips For Beginners In Their Twenties.
Storage Containers:
If you’re planning to meal prep your lunches ahead of time so you spend less money while on-the-go, or you just enjoy leftovers, then these microwavable storage containers will be your best friend!
Knives:
For the most basic tools, make sure you have a chef’s knife and paring knife.
Pots and Pans:
Obviously, you’re going to need to cook on something so don’t forget about these kitchen supplies.
Sheet Pan:
Sometimes cooking requires the oven, so a sheet pan should be accessible.
Colander & Mixing Bowl:
Drain pasta and mix in the sauce all in one!
Cutting Board:
Use cutting boards that you can easily toss in the dishwasher for your convenience.
Measuring Cup:
Please, don’t try to eyeball ingredients when you’re getting started. I’ve ruined many, MANY cakes that way. Do yourself a favor and spend $5 on a measuring cup. Your taste buds will thank you.
Cooking Utensils:
Additionally, tongs, wooden spoons, whisks, spatulas, and yes, even a can opener are cooking utensils that should be in your kitchen supplies.
Over Mitts:
Ouch! Don’t burn yourself.
Kitchen Cloths:
Lastly, clean up your culinary mess with a dish towel or, if you don’t have a dishwasher, use them to dry your hand-washed plates.
Basic kitchen supplies are necessary for the newest cooks, so make sure you have what you need to get started!
