Nowadays, phone companies like Apple and Samsung are implementing features so that your phone camera settings act like an actual professional camera you see on picture day. There’s a chance that you don’t know how to find the right settings to make your Instagram photos look just right. Do not fret dear reader because I have the solution for you. Get ready to post those professional looking photos!
Aperture – Focal Point
Just like any real camera, your new phone probably has these camera settings. The aperture tool allows a specific amount of light into the lens. The lower the aperture, the more light is allowed into a specific element in the photo.
If you want a photo where the main focus is on you (not the background), the aperture should be on its lower setting. If you want a detailed background, the aperture should be at its highest setting.
ISO – Light Source
ISO is another tool used for the camera. It’s basically an artificial light source. The best time to use a really high ISO setting is indoors when it’s dark. However, when it’s really sunny, the lowest ISO setting makes a subject clearer in the picture.
TIPS:
- Utilize the golden hour (when the sun is just above the horizon). This is the best time to take photos. It’s also the best way to get that summery feel by making that highlight pop.
- Live photos have more settings than just moving pictures. There’s a loop, bounce, and long exposure.
- Long exposure is the best setting for moving streetcars/moving vehicles during the night for that cool blur-like city vibe.

Lastly, if you want your photo to have a certain aesthetic, I recommend Vsco as a good editing app. They have great aesthetic-like filters that can tie your whole picture together, so you always have professional looking photos!
